New wheelbuilding film; Ben building a super light Enve x Tactic set up

Ben Sharp of Sharp Precision Wheels has made almost every set of custom hoops Spoon Customs has produced in the last half decade. He’s an expert in his field, and one of just a handful of wheelbuilders working in the UK with his knowledge and experience.

Now based out of Spoon’s HQ, Unit 2 in Surrey, Sharp shares insights into his meticulous process as he constructs a super lightweight wheel build designed around Enve’s SES 2.3 Clincher rim, laced with a Sapim CX Ray spoke and ultra high spec’ Tactic Racing hubs.

Whilst the weight weenies still chase numbers, with no regard to use case or longevity and the factory brands tout aero gains without regard for the system as a whole, often skimping on build time, the best wheel builders know and regard the selection and marriage of each component in the wheel system as paramount. Then take the time to build it properly.

With the right components in hand for the person they’re building the wheels for, wheel builders use their skill and judgement as they spend hours lacing, tensioning, stressing and repeating a process they’ve honed and developed over years in the business. Chasing a theoretical perfect, that in truth is never attainable.

The result is a much more accurately tensioned wheel, that will be stable, yet respond instantly handle better and last longer than any machine made set up.

Rage, against the machines.
